One Hyde Park London

Background

One Hyde Park, overlooking London's Hyde Park and next to the capital's most exclusive shops, is a major residential and retail area. The development consists of four towers of serviced apartment blocks above a continuous retail unit housing (Rolex, McLaren Automotive and Abu Dhabi Islamic Bank).

Totalling 385,000 sq ft (35,800 m2) and 86 residential properties, the development is owned by Project Grande (Guernsey) Limited (PGGL), a joint venture between the Christian Candy owned CPC Group and Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim bin Jaber Al Thani, the former Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Qatar. One Hyde Park was designed by Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners, and built by Laing O'Rourke.

We were commissioned to construct and install the gardens which were designed by Gillespies who created a link between contrasting parklands and street scenes through the use of vertically planted surfaces, as well as a major street tree planting programme.

With clever re-alignment to the street edge, the design provided an interface with a number of conservatory spaces within the development which facilitated direct access to the retail area. Continuity of paving treatments and an innovative planting palette, succeeded in making these welcoming and dynamic public spaces.

Tailoring the design to accommodate the existing mature trees called for a range of innovative structural solutions including an ultra slim road deck developed with Arups structural engineers and designed to span over the existing root zone.
